Bacchus Marsh Rotary Art Show
|
Our last show - 2019
Total Prize Money: $7,700 Including one Acquisitive Award The 2019 Bacchus Marsh Rotary Art Show was our 49th annual exhibition and yet again attracted artists from not only Victoria, but New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. Among the 642 entries submitted were works of an astonishing variety of both traditional and emerging media such as oil, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, photography, gouache, charcoal or pencil, photo art, batik and lino-print. Sculptural pieces in wood and metal art were a striking feature of the show, while the whimsical floral decorations drew many compliments. New for this year, the children's treasure hunt was a very popular feature. There were just under a thousand visitors to the show over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Many Victorians had travelled more than sixty kilometres to view the exhibition, while others had travelled from as far away as Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. The Moorabool Shire Council acquired two new paintings to add to its extensive collection. Each acquisition was chosen for the intrinsic message it depicted, rather than for its representation of an iconic Bacchus Marsh building or landscape. |

The Judge's Comments
“Many thanks to the Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh for inviting me to judge the 2018 Art Show.
It was not easy to arrive at winners in the various categories, as the overall standard was very high .
The artists that stood out to me each successfully conveyed their unique artistic language through their works. Their compositions were technically and conceptually refined and demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of their chosen medium.
It was a pleasure to see the level of creativity and talent displayed in the exhibition overall. All the participating artists should be extremely proud of their contributions to the Art Show.”

Artist in Residence for 2019 was Leianne Ivankovic
Visitors to the show were fascinated by Leianne's amazing ability and technique with both acrylic and watercolour and clustered around to ask questions and to hear her describe her special relationship with painting. Children were as intrigued as the adults and Leianne took time to encourage and chat with them. One very young boy was so interested that he stood with Leianne for about half an hour, discussing styles, ideas and techniques. When Leianne introduced herself to him with "Hello! I'm Leianne and I'm an artist", he replied with "Hello. I'm..... and I'm an artist".
Leianne is a Brookfield-based artist who regularly teaches art at a local hardware store. Mostly self-taught, she developed her work with tuition from local artist Janice Webster and was greatly influenced by watercolour workshops with Gisborne based Helen Cottle. Leianne is a regular exhibitor and prize winner in art shows around the region. She is a member of Sunbury, Macedon and Woodend Art Society, and also a member of Artists
Collective of Melton.
Leianne has been painting for around 20 years, working in watercolour, acrylic, oil and resin. When painting, she often uses a rubber chisel (shaper) to carve into the paint while it is still wet. The chisel acts as both her pencil and her brush, helping to add movement and layers of light to her canvas. Leianne paints plein air and at her home studio where she continues to explore her long-term fascination with painting Australian landscapes, native flowers and birds.

The thing I love about painting is that you never stop learning and it is a life time apprenticeship. It is also a great form of meditation….all of life’s problems just seem to disappear when I paint.
